Vancouver international airpor (Click to select text)
Vancouver is home to one of the largest, most lavish airports in North America. There are flights coming in and out of the airport on a daily basis. The noise pollution emitted from airplanes causes major distractions to those who reside in that area and also decreases property value. "Excessive exposure to noise has been found to cause fatigue, headaches, and discomfort in some individuals, even if the noise is not loud enough to cause actual pain." [Collier's Encyclopaedia, volume 17, pg.579] With a runway recently installed at the airport, it is very difficult to abate the amount of noise that surrounding residents must put up with. I believe that the noise pollution at the Vancouver International Airport has reached a point where it is too difficult to control and the living conditions of the surrounding residents near the airport will suffer as a result. Several solutions have been brought upon to tone down the large amounts of noise that originate from aeroplanes. The solutions range from redesigning engines to installing mufflers on existing aeroplane engines and machinery. Unfortunately, these solutions are too expensive for any one company to implement. For example, if a company applied these measures and another did not, the company that did apply the measures would be put at a great financial disadvantage. Therefore, citizens living near the airport remain exposed to the large amounts of noise. Physical damage to one's property is another common characteristic that originates from noise pollution. Damage to homes makes it unpleasant for prospective homebuyers and thus drives down the value of the property. Soundproofing one's home may seem to be a viable option; however, the cost is soundproofing is an unnecessary expense that the homeowner should not pay in the first place. Health issues factor in to one's frustrating living condition near the Vancouver International Airport. Studies have shown that noise is quite bothersome and causes "…psychological and emotional stresses that are difficult to measure. Noise may cause general irritability, may interfere with sleep, may affect a worker's efficiency, or may affect the ability to communicate by speech." [Collier's Encyclopaedia, volume 17, pg.579] Airport officials informed citizens that the recently installed runway at the Vancouver International Airport would be primarily used for arriving planes only. However, this runway has been used for departures, which has caused a stir among residents in that area. This extra noise caused by additional departures can cause additional damages to property and can also lead to further health problems such as hearing loss, and an increase in stress levels. "People at home are particularly susceptible, having to close windows even in summer and not being able to make full use of gardens or balconies."(TSPP, Tolley and Turton, pg.278) The noise pollution problem around the Vancouver International Airport is one that should not be overlooked. Noise pollution is a bigger problem than one may think, as it has been proven to cause damage both physically and psychologically. Furthermore, this is not only a local problem: "It is estimated that some 135 million people in OECD countries suffer transport noise levels in excess of 65dB, equivalent to the sound of a busy street through open windows." (TSPP, Tolley and Turton, pg.278) With current complaints from citizens living near the airport ranging from health problems to property damage, these current problems should convince provincial governments to stabilise them and perhaps even provide benefits to people who live around those areas.
